The press embargo is a clock. The quote was written to that clock.
Junket answers are not secret. They are scheduled. Treat the time stamp as part of the quote.
An embargo is a promise: you may have the interview now, you may not publish until a time. The public talks about leaks. The industry talks about calendars. Most of what looks like a sudden quote was sitting in a hundred inboxes with a date on it.
This is not a conspiracy. It is logistics. A film, an album, a tour needs a week of headlines that do not collide with someone else’s week. Publicists stagger stories so Tuesday is the stills, Wednesday is the personal anecdote that is still on-message, Thursday is the clip. The person answering questions is doing a shift. The clock is the shift supervisor.
What you are allowed to know
Embargoes are often printed in the email. “Not for publication before 9am ET.” That sentence is as much a part of the quote as the quote. If a magazine runs early, it is not brave. It is breaking a workplace rule it agreed to in order to get in the room.
When twenty outlets drop the same sentence in the same hour, you are not watching a coincidence. You are watching a successful schedule. Write that. “Overnight, X said Y” is lazier than “Y was released at the embargo.” The second version is checkable if the original advisory exists. The first version is weather.
How to cover a junket without becoming the intern
Name the format: roundtable, one-on-one, satellite, red-carpet stand-up. Those formats produce different sentences. A roundtable is a group oral exam. A one-on-one is a slightly longer oral exam. A carpet is a slogan with legs.
If the person repeats an answer, that is not a personality disorder. That is a talking point surviving six rooms. You can quote it once and say it was repeated. Repeating it six times on your own site is how you become the photocopier.
Do not upgrade a scheduled quote into a confession. “Opens up” is a verb publicists love because it makes a calendar look like intimacy. Check whether the same “opening up” appears in three other outlets at 9:01. If it does, the intimacy was stamped.
What this is not
It is not a ban on interviews. Interviews are how public work gets explained. It is a ban on pretending the explanation arrived by magic. Magic is a category. Scheduling is a job.
When you write the piece, put the time in the piece. The clock is the only part of the junket that never lies.
