The thumbnail face is a job. Nobody looks like that in a kitchen.
Open mouth, pointing finger, red arrow. It is ugly on purpose. It is also labor.

You can hate the face and still admit it works. The thumbnail is a poster for a film that has to beat a thousand other posters on a phone. Subtlety loses to a red circle. Creators who refuse the face often refuse the rent.
This is not a moral collapse of a generation. It is poster design under worse conditions than a 1990s video store, with a client who is also the actor.
What a magazine should say
Describe the tactic when it is the story: a creator whose whole brand is shock, a title that the video does not pay off, a face that implies a disaster that is actually a product review. Do not imply that using a camera is fake. Performance is the medium.
The interesting piece is economic. Who still gets to look bored in a thumbnail (already famous) and who has to look possessed (trying to be). That split is class, not taste.
We will not
We will not mock a teenager’s face as content. We will not reprint a thumbnail we do not have rights to as if it were our photography. We can describe a style without stealing the still. If a still is required, it will be ours or licensed.
The face is a tool. Tools can be tacky and effective at the same time. Grown coverage can hold both.
